Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have praised comic book series Locke & Key.

It was previously announced that the pair are working with Steven Spielberg to develop a television adaptation.

Orci told Comic Book Movie: "It's not often that you read a graphic novel where you can imagine dialogue that's in the novel going right to the script. That's a gift [for a writer]."

Co-producer Kurtzman added that the original comic was "a work of absolute genius".

"[Writer] Joe Hill is brilliant [and] Gabriel Rodriguez's drawings are unbelievable," Kurtzman said. "The world that they created was so emotional and so surreal, and yet grounded in a very beautiful family story."

He also explained that it was the combination of family drama and science-fiction ideas that had originally drawn him and Orci to the project.

"[It's] really a story about a family trying to repair itself after suffering major trauma," he said. "Then, add to that the idea of a haunted house with an endless set of keys that open up different powers and abilities, and it just felt like something we'd be first in line to watch."
