The series focuses on a family who are forced to look after a baby when the mother ends up in prison.
Plimpton has now told Vanity Fair that the show has a mixture of dark and light moments.
"It's dark and we put this baby into all kinds of horrible life-threatening situations, but ultimately our heart is in the right place," she said. "The baby is not harmed in any way. It's all carefully supervised and well choreographed. She's got a professional minder who comes in and her parents are there. It's all fine."
Plimpton revealed that she has enjoyed working with the baby, saying: "It's actually been really lovely... I never thought I'd say this, because I don't actually like children that much, [but] it's been really lovely having an infant around. When she smiles, it just takes all the tension out of the room."
However, Plimpton joked that she has lost her temper with the baby in the past, quipping: "I did punch her once. But I got a strict dressing-down from the Fox higher-ups and that will not be happening again."
Raising Hope premieres on Tuesday at 9/8c on Fox.
