Speaking to TV Guide, Bruno Heller explained that Jane (Simon Baker) will be afraid that anyone he gets close to will be harmed by Red John.
However, Heller added that Lisbon (Robin Tunney) will stay close to Jane.
"Her faith in him and her willingness to go to bat for him means they're much tighter," he said. "As much as he wants to protect her by pulling away from her, he feels more love for her this year because they've been through so much, yet she's proven that she'll be there for him."
The Mentalist premieres tomorrow at 10/9c on CBS.
