Speaking to Zap2It, Metcalfe explained that even Luke's military haircut shows how driven he is.
"It's another element to my character that helps me stand out," he said. "Everyone else is more of a veteran on the team, and their look mirrors that.
"I'm very by-the-book, and I want to present myself as I think I should, coming from Washington DC."
He continued: "The Marshals team that I join, their members, they're more of a Southern flavour. They're trying to blend in. Luke comes from an affluent family, and his father's somewhat of a political big shot. That's why he joined the Marshals service - to make his father proud, to prove himself to his father, to get out from under his father's shadow."
Metcalfe added that he can relate to Luke's desire to be taken seriously.
"Playing this character in Chase kind of mirrors my own experience in Hollywood," he said. "I've always been very driven to prove myself and to be accepted and seen as a credible actor."
Chase continues tonight at 10/9c on NBC.
