Tribune has welcomed the announcement that UPN and The WB will close and be replaced by a larger fifth American terrestrial network.
The company, which owns 26 TV stations in 22 major markets, announced today that 16 of its stations will be affiliated with The CW. It currently has 19 WB affiliates.
Current Tribune-owned WB stations that will flip to The CW are WPIX-TV New York City; KTLA-TV Los Angeles; WGN-TV Chicago; WLVI-TV Boston; KDAF-TV Dallas; WBDC-TV Washington, D.C.; KHWB-TV Houston; WBZL-TV Miami; KWGN-TV Denver; KPLR-TV St. Louis; KWBP-TV Portland; WTTV-TV Indianapolis; KSWB-TV San Diego; WTXX-TV Hartford; WNOL-TV New Orleans; and WEWB-TV Albany.
"This agreement is a great step forward for our TV group," said Tribune chairman and CEO Dennis FitzSimons. "Our stations, the communities they serve, and Tribune shareholders will benefit from this long- term affiliation with a network powered by two large, successful studios owned by Time Warner and CBS Corporation."
In some markets, Tribune and CBS both own WB and UPN affiliates. As indicated by the station list above, Tribune will flip its stations in Boston, Dallas, Miami and New Orleans to The CW, while CBS will flip its UPN stations in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Seattle.
Of the Tribune stations set to lose their network affiliation, Tribune Broadcasting president John Reardon said that the company is "confident that the scale of our television group will enable us to continue to acquire quality syndicated programming, both first-run and off-network, for our three independent stations."
