BBC World gears up for US launch
Discovery already distributes BBC America, which has been running promos inviting viewers to call their cable or satellite provider and request the addition of BBC World to their channel lineups.
"U.S. consumers are ready for this unique news service - one that provides an impartial, global perspective on domestic and world events," said Bill Goodwyn, president of affiliate sales and marketing at Discovery Networks U.S. "We look forward to working with our distribution partners to deliver this compelling content in a 24/7 channel."
The channel will go by the name BBC World News in the US. It is already available in Canada and over 200 other countries.
"Discovery Communications is the market leader, committed to delivering the highest quality channels and marketing support to the U.S. multi-channel industry," said Jeff Hazell, director of distribution and business development at BBC World. "That experience, plus Discovery’s proven track record and considerable success with the BBC brand to date, will be invaluable in the roll-out of the BBC World News channel in the U.S."
A spokesperson for BBC World based in London added to Digital Spy that the channel expects "that BBC World News programming will continue to broadcast on BBC America and PBS stations across the U.S." after BBC World News launches as a 24-hour channel in the country. BBC America currently carries three hours of BBC World in the mornings (6am-9am ET) and an evening newscast (6pm ET). Many PBS stations also take a half-hour bulletin in a late night timeslot.
