According to The Daily Telegraph, a number of media outlets have speculated on Bert's sexuality since he wrote a message on the show's official Twitter page in June.
The post read: "Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo', a little less 'hawk'."
A number of people have speculated that the message suggests that Bert is gay because "mo" is a slang term for homosexual.
The show has also been praised for featuring gay stars such as Neil Patrick Harris and Wanda Sykes, and for including a performance of the gay anthem 'What I Am' by will.i.am.
However, Sesame Workshop's vice-president of corporate communications Ellen Lewis told the Los Angeles Times: "We've always reached out to a variety of actors and athletes and celebrities to appear on the show, and our programming has always appealed to adults as much as children. Honestly, the idea that anyone would interpret [this season] that way never crossed our minds."
