Congress confirms US analogue switch-off
Published Thursday, Feb 2 2006, 17:16 GMT | By Dave West
Plans forcing US broadcasters to switch analogue television signals off by 2009 has been agreed by Congress.
The legislation fixes a deadline of 17 February 2009 for the switch-off and secures $1.5bn (£844m) for ensuring Americans are digital-ready. Each family is entitled to $80 (£45) towards a set-top box under the new programme.
Republican and digital-advocate Joe Barton called the move a "great technical revolution."
The bill was passed before in December but Senate technical changes meant confirmation was necessary.
