Deadline reports that the actress will play New York City's first female commissioner in the project.
Bassett recently played Dr Cate Banfield in the final season of ER and will appear in 2011 comic adaptation Green Lantern. She has featured in episodes of Alias and The Simpsons.
Linda Fairstrein and Kenneth L. Solarz will write the script for the One Police Plaza pilot. The pair will also serve as executive producers alongside Mark Gordon and Debora Spera.
