NBC claims demographic win in Sweeps
Published Tuesday, May 22 2001, 12:33 BST | By Neil Wilkes
NBC is claiming a victory in the May sweeps, emphasising the importance of the 18-49 demographic.
Scott Sassa, NBC West Cost President, said: "We’re number one on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and Mondays are looking a lot better since 'Weakest Link'."
He predicted NBC would finish with 5.1m in the 18-49 demographic, FOX following with 5.0m. ABC and CBS would finish with 3.9m.
He also spoke of the growing desire to target higher-income groups.
"Companies that come to us to advertise higher end products want to reach customers with higher incomes," he said. "It’s more efficient for them to reach them all in one place. The most important thing here is volume. We’re not a cable network."
"A lot of people don’t like to give credit to 'ER' in its seventh season," he continued. "I think you’d be hard pressed to look at any two shows this season and find better episodes than the season finales of 'ER' and 'The West Wing.'"
And to this Fall: "Considering that we’re returning with four nights virtually in tact, which is something we haven’t done since 1989, we feel very confident about next season being a good one for NBC."
