The show's network The CW announced last year that it would not be picking up a full second season and rumours have suggested that the series will be dropped after tonight's episode.
Speaking to TV Guide, Tigelaar admitted that her plans "definitely" changed when she heard that the show would not receive a full season.
"At first we thought, 'We don't have time to change it, we have to do a total overhaul and this is not an episode we would end the series on'," she said. "Then we sat around, got a bunch of alcohol and talked a lot about whether it was a romantic love triangle or a family series and ultimately we did say this is a story about family. It's about Baze, Cate and Lux before it's about Cate, Baze and Ryan."
She continued: "Even though there are so many more stories I would've liked to tell, and if they want us to keep going we'll figure it out, it'll be really satisfying for people to watch."
The season finale of Life Unexpected airs tonight at 8/7c on The CW.
