US mobile phone operator Cingular announced on Tuesday that it is launching an on-demand mobile video service on its 3G network.

"Cingular Video offers the highest degree of personalization and the widest selection of desirable content in the US market," said Cingular's vice president of mobile browse and developer programme, Sam Hall. "The service is designed with today's mobile consumer in mind and users are never more than a few clicks from their favourite programs."

So far, Cingular has signed content deals with ABC, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney, ESPN, Fox Sports, Fox News, Fox broadcast, Fuel, HBO, iFilm, Music Choice, NBC, Speed, The Weather Channel and the TV Guide Channel. The provider plans to add content from CBS SportsLine, NASCAR and TCM in the near future.

Cingular currently offers 3G service in Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tacoma and Washington, DC. A subscription to Cingular Video comes as part of a $19.99 per month unlimited media package, although content from premium sources such as HBO will be subject to additional charges.
