Perry, who created and stars in the programme, explained that he wanted to reveal the secret world that exists at the shows and conventions which take place at second-tier arenas like the one featured in the series.
"If you look at any website and you look at the actual events that take place at these big arenas, it's pretty crazy," he told People. "It's not just Bruce Springsteen you know, it's wrestling, it's lingerie football, it's the circus!
"I thought it would be interesting if you pulled the curtain and revealed who works there. It's sort of a workplace comedy but they have made a family of dysfunctional people."
Perry added that his character Ben will go through a number of changes over the course of the show.
"Something happens in the pilot and he learns that how everybody feels about him is that he's just selfish," he said. "Throughout the series he's going to try to change that and try to be a better person."
Mr Sunshine launched on ABC yesterday and continues on February 14.
