The actor will star as special agent Sam Cooper in the CBS crime drama, having first played the character in an episode of the original Criminal Minds last year.
"Playing someone like Sam is at the source of what I'm always trying to do in my word," he told the Los Angeles Times. "He is a leader that thinks everyone has a light inside of them, no matter what kinds of horrible things they are capable of."
"I'm always interested in human nature," he continued. "[Sam] wants to heal those that come in contact with this darkness."
Whitaker, best known for his roles in films such as The Last King of Scotland and Phone Booth, also admitted that a regular role on television is "a new situation for me".
"I'm not used to being in just one place," he explained. "I'm more like a gypsy, going from place to place. But I really like this character and I realised what I could do with him."
Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour begins tonight at 10/9c on CBS.
