While both series focus on police activity and forms of corruption, the showrunner recently told reporters that the direct involvement of real police officers has helped to differentiate the new Fox drama.
"We have our scripts vetted by a current homicide detective in the Chicago police department, who was raised there," he revealed. "So my view on these police officers tends to be in a more heroic light [and] tends to be more sympathetic to the challenges that they go through. It's just a different show [to The Shield]."
He added that filming on location in Chicago also helped to give The Chicago Code a distinct feel.
"We were invited in by that city in a pretty spectacular way," he said. "I'm a big believer in embedding yourself in a certain place and taking advantage of the distinctions of that place."
The Chicago Code continues on Mondays at 9/8c on Fox.
