The project will focus on Adam, a 32-year-old with no family ties who struggles to adapt when he falls in love with a woman with two children and an ex-husband.
Former NYPD Blue star Somerville will play the character's love interest Michelle, according to Deadline.
The actress previously starred in short-lived ABC comedy-drama Cashmere Mafia and recently appeared in an episode of USA's Royal Pains.
Johnny Sneed will also appear in the pilot as Michelle's ex-husband. His recent television credits include roles in The Mentalist, NCIS: Los Angeles and Terriers.
The Other People's Kids pilot has been written by former My Name Is Earl scribe Hunter Covington.
