The project will star stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings and Glory Daze actor Chris D'Elia as a couple who are working through their romantic issues.
Deadline reports that D'Angelo will play the selfish and cynical mother of Cummings's character.
The actress plays the recurring role of Barbara 'Babs' Miller on HBO's Entourage and has also appeared in episodes of Cougar Town and Frasier.
Cummings will also executive produce the NBC pilot, which is expected to draw material from her stand-up work.
The project is under consideration for the network's 2011-12 television season.
