The former Lost star, who is preparing to appear in the West End play In A Forest, Dark And Deep, explained that television series take up too much of his time.
"This has nothing to do with any kind of snobbery," he told The Daily Telegraph. "I think some of the best writing is on television.
"It's because of the time commitment, how much it restricts my ability to spend time with my family, and do things that I love to do. Having a studio tell you when to jump and how high eight months of the year for six years is not a relationship I want to get into again."
In A Forest, Dark And Deep will open on March 3 at the Vaudeville Theatre.
