The historical drama focuses on Jason, a soldier who travels across the country after the Civil War and settles in a town in Missouri.
The community is facing a number of problems and the residents believe that Jason can help them.
Deadline reports that Henderson has now signed up to play Jason in the drama. He will join his Off The Map co-star Rachel Lefevre, who will play a war widow called Anna.
The Crossing is in second position to Off The Map for both Henderson and Lefevre, suggesting that NBC will have to recast the roles if the ABC medical drama is renewed.
Meanwhile, Bill Sage has signed up to appear in The Crossing as a disfigured former colonel in the Confederate army who is known as the 'Grey Ghost'. The character is thought to live in a cave and cause problems for the town's residents.
Sage appeared in the movies American Psycho and Precious and has had guest roles in shows including Nurse Jackie, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Cashmere Mafia.
