The untitled comedy focuses on a working-class man who lives with his wife, his grown-up daughter, his grandson and his mother, who has recently been widowed.
According to TV Line, Newton has now signed up to play the adult daughter.
Newton, who is best known for her role in Ugly Betty, signed up to star in NBC's comedy Love Bites last year but the show has still not been broadcast and rumours have suggested that it will never be aired.
The actress's Love Bites co-star Greg Grunberg has also signed up to star in a new pilot this season, suggesting that the future of Love Bites is in doubt.
Newton's new CBS project has been penned by Jeff and Jackie Filgo, who previously worked together on That '70s Show and The New Adventures of Old Christine.
