He told SFX that the Starz drama will feature a modern interpretation of Prince Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower).
"For Arthur you want someone who has a very strong masculinity and [someone that] people would follow but [who] is also in the process of discovering himself," he explained. "Jamie's also very likeable even when the character is doing things that you shouldn't really like."
He continued: "The way he holds himself is quite modern and so to put that into this myth gives it a slightly different flavour, without it being anachronistic."
Chibnall also suggested that Joseph Fiennes will play an imposing version of the wizard Merlin, with a "warrior-monk attitude".
"Merlin's not entirely comfortable with his powers," he said. "He has certain visions and powers and doesn't quite know what to do with them.
"But magic for Merlin becomes almost like an addiction, in both good ways and bad ways. It's both joyous and very dangerous."
Camelot premieres on April 1 on Starz.
