The pilot, written by William Laurin and Glenn Davis, will follow two rival sisters as they struggle to survive in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.
TV Line reports that former Lost star Welliver will play a mysterious man who dedicates his life to hunting the living dead.
The actor previously played a recurring role on FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy and currently features on The Good Wife. He has also made guest appearances on The Closer, Supernatural and Prison Break.
Robin Hood's Lucy Griffiths, Lights Out actress Meredith Hagner and Privileged star Brian Hallisay have all previously signed up for roles in the Awakening pilot.
The project will be produced by Warner Bros TV and production company Reveille.
