The drama stars Martin Henderson as Jason, a solider who travels across the country after the Civil War.
He settles in a small town but discovers that the community is hoping that he can solve their problems.
Deadline says that Knepper has now signed up to play the town's sheriff. The character is said to be a veteran Confederate with a quick temper.
Knepper previously starred as T-Bag in Prison Break and recently reprised the role for A&E's new series Breakout Kings. He has also appeared in shows including Shameless, Stargate Universe and Heroes.
Emma Bell, Bill Sage, Rachel Lefevre and Claire Wellin have already been cast in Reconstruction.
