The news anchor, who took over the broadcast in 2006, was recently reported to be leaving the network when her current contract expires in order to pursue the launch of her own syndicated talkshow.
Speaking to The New York Times, Couric revealed that she believes she was "overly ambitious" during her time on the programme and would do things differently if able to repeat the experience.
"I would have given people what they were used to, a traditional newscast," she explained. "And then as they got to know me and got more comfortable, then I would've started toying with the format and trying new things.
"I think we were overly ambitious. We probably would have been better off playing it a little safer."
Couric will release her new advice book, titled The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives on April 12.
