He told TV Guide that the Starz series explores the human side of famous characters such as Arthur (Campbell-Bower) and the wizard Merlin (Joseph Fiennes).
"Our version is somewhat more modern than other retellings [of the myth]," he claimed. "We're going for human emotions rather than having the pomp and circumstance of kings and queens already instilled in power."
The actor also expressed his hope that viewers will relate to his performance as a young and inexperienced King Arthur.
"We find these [legendary] people as normal people so hopefully the audience will be able to invest in the characters," he said.
Campbell Bower previously suggested that Camelot will chart Arthur's growth from his teenage years to adulthood.
Camelot airs on Fridays at 10pm on Starz in the US. The show will air in the UK later this year on Channel 4.
