The first series of the cult show, which stars John Simm as a detective catapulted back to 1973 after a car accident in the present day, regularly drew more than 7 million viewers earlier this year.
Simm will return with co-stars Philip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews and Marshall Lancaster for the second, while Kevin McNally is joining the cast as Supt Harry Woolf.
The first episode of the new run will be set in a casino operated by Tony Crane (guest star Marc Warren), a show source told DS.
Filming on the eight episodes will continue through September ahead of broadcast next January.
