The new series would focus on H.G. Wells (Jaime Murray) and would take place in an 1890s steam-punk environment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The character, full name Helena Wells, was introduced in the show's second season premiere as a talented writer and inventor who used her brother, the male H.G. Wells, as a front.
In the proposed spinoff project, Wells will team up with a mechanical engineer and use both her scientific knowledge and her relationship with the commissioner of police to solve complex cases.
A pilot, written by Warehouse 13 showrunner Jack Kenny and other unspecific writer, is believed to be in the early stages.
A third season of Warehouse 13 was commissioned last October, after the second run attracted an average of 3.4m viewers, making it Syfy's most watched series of 2010.
Series star Eddie McClintock recently claimed that Syfy has done a "great job" with the third season, which will star former Smallville actor Aaron Ashmore.
