She told TV Guide that Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) will be "reluctant" to return to work, having shot herself to save her brother in the first season finale.
"I didn't want Jane coming back to work to balloons and cake," she explained. "I wanted a reluctant hero. She experienced a trauma and she's stalling about working again."
Tamaro also confirmed that the upcoming second season will feature a greater focus on romance for both Rizzoli and her partner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander).
"[There will be] more love interests this season for both," she said. ""Both women think about settling down."
Chris Vance, Colin Egglesfield and Jacqueline Bisset will all play recurring roles in the second season of Rizzoli & Isles, while Fox news anchor Bill O'Reilly will also appear as himself in one episode.
Rizzoli & Isles returns to TNT on July 11 at 10/9c.
