Michael Mann has described upcoming HBO series Luck as "one of the best things" he has ever done.

The Heat director will produce the drama project, which has been created by Deadwood's David Milch and will star Dustin Hoffman.

"I really didn't want to get back into television, but the script was just so damn good," Mann explained to the Los Angeles Times. "It was one of the best things anyone has ever given me to direct."

Mann, who also directed the Luck pilot, last worked on television in 2002 as an executive producer on short-lived CBS drama Robbery Homicide Division. However, he has not directed for the medium since 1989 television movie L.A. Takedown.

Luck will star John C. McGinley, Jon Ortiz, Dennis Farina, Ian Hart, Michael Gambon, Joan Allen and Nick Nolte.

The series is expected to premiere on HBO in early 2012.
