Danny DeVito will be honoured with the 'Icon Award' at the inaugural Critics' Choice Television Awards.

The Taxi star will be given the gong at the Beverly Hills Hotel ceremony by his It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia colleague Rob McElhenney.

DeVito's turn as Louie De Palma in Taxi won him an Emmy and the number one spot in TV Guide's '50 Greatest TV Characters'.

He went on to star in shows including Friends, The Simpsons, Larry Sanders and movies such as Twins and Batman Returns.

"We are thrilled that Danny DeVito is our first Critics' Choice Television Icon because, as the first recipient, he will define it for the future," said Joey Berlin, acting president of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association.

"We are recognising Danny for his contributions both in front of and behind the camera, but also off camera. With Danny, we are able to pay homage to the past as well as celebrate the present, as his career has been remarkable for its continued relevance, from Taxi to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

The Critics' Choice Television Awards take place on Sunday and will be hosted by So You Think You Can Dance's Cat Deeley. They will air on June 22 at 8pm ET on Reelz. VH1.com will exclusively live stream the show.

Elijah Wood, Tyler Posey, Gillian Jacobs, Sam Trammell, Kevin Connolly, Connie Britton, Adam Scott, BJ Novak and Wilmer Valderrama will all present awards at the ceremony.
