Mark Romanek has admitted that he found Fox's decision not to pick up Locke & Key "disappointing".

The Never Let Me Go director helmed the pilot for the comic book adaptation, which starred Miranda Otto as Nina Locke.

Romanek told Digital Spy: "It was a great experience. I loved working with [the] DreamWorks people, I think the original graphic novel is really brilliant [and] I learned a lot from doing it."

He continued: "Everyone thought it came out well - it's just the vicissitudes of the television business, it was not what they wanted to deal with for some reason."

Romanek added that Steven Spielberg had supported the pilot, which was officially rejected by Fox in May.

"Steven Spielberg was really very complimentary about it which was a great thing for me to know," he said. "The screenwriter, showrunner and producer Josh Friedman came out with the great line, 'We hit it out of the park but [Fox] wanted to play football instead'."

Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly previously defended the decision to axe Locke & Key, claiming that the proposed series didn't fit in with the network's schedule.

The Locke & Key pilot will be screened at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego.
