In a future episode, Ray (Thomas Jane) will have sex with a transgender receptionist called Kyla (Jamie Clayton).
The experience, and the threat of a new rival, could then lead Ray to consider having a homosexual encounter.
Burson has now admitted that Jane was unsure about the storyline at first.
"The idea of kissing a man was not a comfortable one for him, but he did great," she told TV Guide. "They had to kiss for hours. After his initial shyness, she became a woman for him."
Jane revealed that he was impressed with Clayton, saying: "I asked, 'So where's the guy?' and was told, 'That's her!' There was this beautiful girl who blew me away."
Clayton, who is a transgender woman herself, added that she is pleased that Hung is including the storyline.
"For them to want to do this is great," she said. "You can't keep doing vanilla-sex stuff. Jane Adams told me she was so excited that Hung was finally doing something a little crazy."
The new season of Hung, which will also feature appearances from Ana Ortiz and Kaitlin Doubleday, will air on HBO later this year.
