The actor and former Saturday Night Live star joined Curb Your Enthusiasm for the sixth season to portray Leon Black, who was taken in by Larry David following Hurricane Katrina and refuses to leave after taking a liking to glitzy Los Angeles.
Smoove claimed that he tries to imbue Leon with some of his own personality traits, but the character is often far more manic than he is in real life.
He told CNN: "Leon's the guy that lives in the moment. Who doesn't want a guy like that around?
"He brings the ruckus! Leon just happens to have a high level of ruckus-ness. He's more in the 90% range. Me, JB, I'm more in the 50% range."
Leon's Curb Your Enthusiasm antics have included trying to convince Michael Richards that he suffered from a fictional Groat's syndrome and aiding David in an attempt retrieve a stolen T-shirt.
Smoove will return alongside David and guest stars Rosie O'Donnell and Michael J Fox for the eighth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which premieres July 10 on HBO.
Fellow Curb Your Enthusiasm star Susie Essman recently joked that David constantly threatens to end the improvisational sitcom.
