James Van Der Beek has suggested that his videos on comedy website Funny Or Die helped him to get a role in ABC's new comedy Apartment 23.

Van Der Beek will play a version of himself in the comedy, which was picked up by ABC in May.

The former Dawson's Creek star has now revealed that his videos on Funny Or Die were one of the reasons that he got the job.

"The people who created Apartment 23 saw the Funny Or Die videos and said, 'This is perfect, we want him on the show doing this kind of comedy'," Van Der Beek told The Hollywood Reporter. "Now they're creating this whole character that has my basic resumé on it but the rest is completely made up."

Van Der Beek also revealed that filming the Funny Or Die videos made him want to try comedy.

"I had so much fun doing the videos and they got such a great response that I thought, 'You know what, maybe I should look at comedy this year'," he said. "When Apartment 23 came, it was a dream team of producers, writers and directors and this wonderful package. I thought, 'If I'm going to do comedy, these are the people I want to work with - I'd be a fool to say no to this one'."

Apartment 23 will premiere on ABC in midseason.
