Sedgwick announced that she had decided to leave The Closer in December of last year
She confessed that she struggled with whether or not she should leave the TNT series once her contract expired, stating that she ultimately decided seven seasons of commitment to the show was enough, New York Magazine reports.
"Well, my contract is finished, and I really deliberated all last year - and it was a tough decision," Sedgwick said. "But I just felt like creatively it was time for me to move on."
In addition, the actress went on to admit that she missed spending time with her family, including husband Kevin Bacon.
"Also, I'd been making the trip [from New York City] to Los Angeles for the past seven years," Sedgwick said. "Being away from my loved ones, that's a long time to be away. And frankly, I feel like, 'Let's leave on top.' People forget so quickly about what a good job you were doing."
Sedgwick was initially hesitant to sign to the series in 2005 over similar familial concerns. In the end, Bacon agreed to take some time off from making movies in order to stay home with the children so as to allow his wife to take the Emmy Award-winning role.
The Closer's executive producer James Duff recently revealed that the show's final season is about "love and loss", stating that various events over the course of the season will force Sedgwick's Brenda to question what she's doing.
The final season of The Closer will premiere tonight at 9/8c on TNT.
