Syfy series Eureka will come to an end after an abridged sixth season, reports suggest.

The second half of the show's fourth season airs on Mondays at 8/7c, while a fifth, 13-part run is currently filming.

Syfy has now commissioned six more episodes to wrap up the series, according to Deadline.

In a statement, Syfy programming chief Mark Stern refused to elaborate on the show's future, saying: "[Series creators] Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia have brought a creative vitality to Eureka that has kept it fresh and inventive. Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise."

It was recently announced that a special animated episode of Eureka will air this Christmas, with The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons and Battlestar Galactica actor Edward James Olmos playing voice roles.

In addition, Eureka's sister series Warehouse 13, which airs on Syfy on Mondays at 9/8c, is expected to be renewed for a fourth season.
