ABC's president Paul Lee has defended the network's upcoming comedy Work It, claiming that it made him "cackle with laughter".
The Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco cross-dressing sitcom has been savaged by critics, but Lee insisted that he is not ashamed of the project.
"Sometimes you pick up a pilot just because it absolutely makes you cackle with laughter, and that was the case with Work It," he told journalists at the TCA Summer Press Tour.
"I make absolutely no excuses for that show. We didn't think this room would like it, and I don't think we have a problem with that."
Lee added: "I'm a Brit, it is in my contract that I have to do one cross-dressing show a year; I was brought up on Monty Python. What can I do?"
Work It will air on ABC in the 2011-12 midseason.
