Linus Roache is to reprise his Law & Order role on spinoff series Special Victims Unit.

The actor played ADA Michael Cutter on the NBC crime drama from 2008 until the show's conclusion in 2010.

Roache will now appear in the 13th season premiere of Law & Order: SVU, it was confirmed in an NBC statement.

"I am very happy to be bringing Michael Cutter back to life," said the actor. "I think Special Victims is going to be an area where Cutter's passion for justice can really come forth."

His SVU appearance will see Cutter promoted to Bureau Chief of the DA's office, in a position that oversees the Special Victims Unit.

SVU showrunner Warren Leight explained: "If Cutter was a bit of a hot head in the past, the passage of time and some added responsibility in his new job has made him more mature, and perhaps a bit more jaded."

Law & Order: SVU stars Christopher Meloni and BD Wong previously confirmed that they will not return to the show next season, while their co-star Mariska Hargitay will appear in a supporting role.

Danny Pino and Kelly Giddish have also signed up to play a new pair of lead detectives, and Ice-T will reprise his role as Detective Odafin 'Fin' Tutuola

Law & Order: SVU will return to NBC on Wednesdays at 10/9c in the fall.
