Criminal Minds star Paget Brewster has suggested that her temporary firing from the show was a "mistake".

Brewster and co-star AJ Cook were dropped from the CBS crime drama last year, though both will return as series regulars for the upcoming seventh season.

Brewster told TV Line: "Unfortunately a mistake was made when AJ and I were let go."

The actress also commented on the departure of Rachel Nichols (Ashley Seaver), who was brought in to replace Cook but will not return for the new season.

"Rachel did a great job, and then when we were brought back, she was let go," she said. "So frankly, it was a lot of unnecessary firing, which is a shame."

Brewster added that the Criminal Minds season premiere, which reintroduces her character Prentiss, is "amazing".

"There is a passage of time, and the first episode is not linear," she said. "It's a series of flash-forwards and rewinds to get us to where we are."

CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler recently suggested that the temporary cast changes on Criminal Minds had benefited the show.

""In an interesting way, what happened last year revealed certain story points that the writers were challenged by," she said. "It revealed some interesting aspects of the other characters' lives."

Criminal Minds will return to CBS on September 21.
