ABC has picked up new single-camera comedy pilot The Singles.

The project, created by Accidentally on Purpose scribe David Holden, is loosely based on the writer's own life.

After returning home from the Peace Corp, the newly-single Holden discovered that his mother and father had divorced, his sister was jilted at the altar and his brother was still struggling to find the right woman.

Friends and neighbours began to refer to the Holdens as 'the Singles', inspiring the title of the new comedy.

In addition to his Accidentally on Purpose work, Holden also wrote for MTV anthology series Undressed in 2001 and Fox sitcom The War at Home between 2005 and 2007.

Sony Television will produce the pilot alongside Original Film. The Big C's Neal Moritz and Vivian Cannon will serve as executive producers, with Holden co-executive producing.

Other comedy projects in development at ABC include a sitcom featuring Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jeff Garlin, Kirstie Alley's comedy The Manzanis.
