Showtime has started working on three new pilots.

The cable network has picked up Masters of Sex, Deadline reports.

The project, based on the Thomas Maier book Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How To Love, focuses on the relationship between Masters and Johnson.

The duo are considered to be among the first scientists to research human sexuality and their studies are credited with being partly responsible for the sexual revolution.

Masters of Sex has been penned by Michelle Ashford, who has worked on The Pacific and Boomtown. She will also executive produce with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, who have previously collaborated on Justified.

Meanwhile, the network is working on a new project from Ann Biderman, who created Southland.

Ray Donovan is described as a "dark family drama with comedic undertones". The show focuses on a man who works as a fixer for celebrities and rich people, but has several problems of his own.

Mark Gordon, whose credits include Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Criminal Minds and Army Wives, will executive produce the project with Biderman.

Elsewhere, Gurland on Gurland is described as a "first-person documentary" comedy which has been written and directed by its star, the filmmaker Andrew Gurland.

The project is expected to focus on the family life of the Last Exorcism writer and his attempts to advance his career.

Showtime is currently preparing to launch two new series - the Claire Danes CIA drama Homeland and Don Cheadle's House of Lies.

The network is also thought to be working on a new series of interviews with comedians, executive produced by former Office star Steve Carell.
