The project, which was ordered to pilot earlier this week, comes from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Lee and Entourage creator Doug Ellin.
Boxer Mike Tyson is also heavily involved in the project, which is based loosely on his life.
Boyega has now signed up to play Donnie, Deadline reports.
Donnie is released from juvenile detention on his 18th birthday and begins to examine what it means to be a man.
Boyega, who reportedly needed boxing skills for the part, recently appeared in the British movie Attack The Block.
Da Brick's pilot has been penned by John Ridley.
