Supernatural creator Kripke will write the project, which has received a pilot production commitment from NBC, according to Deadline.
Titled Revolution, the collaboration is being described as an "epic adventure thriller". Abrams will executive produce alongside Kripke and Lost's Bryan Burk.
Since stepping down as showrunner on Supernatural, Kripke has signed up to write and direct the 2012 film Haunted and is also developing a television adaptation of DC comic Deadman for The CW.
He was previously attached to an adaptation of another comic character, DC's Sandman, but the project was later shelved.
Abrams continues to serve as an executive producer on Fringe and is also involved with new CBS series Person of Interest and Fox's mid-season drama Alcatraz.
He was also recently confirmed to direct the upcoming sequel to 2009's Star Trek film.
