The police drama, starring Maria Bello, is a remake of the British series of the same name that starred Helen Mirren.
The US version is set in a New York homicide department. Bello plays detective Jane Timoney, who has transferred to a new squad.
Bello revealed that she originally turned down the role but agreed to star in the series after it was rewritten.
"When I read the script, I said no to it for a couple of years," she explained. "And then Alex Cunningham wrote the new version and it was so good and so different from the British version."
The actress described her character as a "strong woman who is a good role model for other women".
Prime Suspect airs on Thursdays, but repeats will air on Monday as a replacement for the cancelled Playboy Club.
