Ed Bernero and ABC Studios' adaptation of the Marvel Comics property has been given a put-pilot commitment, reports Deadline.
The commitment means that the pilot is guaranteed to be put into production.
The hour-long television show will reimagine the notoriously violent vigilante Frank Castle as a rising star detective in the New York Police Department who moonlights as the Punisher, bringing justice to victims who the system has failed.
Bernero is best known as showrunner on the Criminal Minds television show.
He is also developing Western show The Eye with ABC.
The Punisher joins The Incredible Hulk, Cloak & Dagger, AKA Jessica Jones and Mockingbird in the pipeline from ABC Studios and Marvel.
Actor Ray Stevenson has said that he would like to reprise the role of Castle after his appearance in 2009's Punisher: War Zone.
