The Men of a Certain Age star will appear as formidable lawyer Bayard Ellis in three episodes of the NBC crime drama.
"I don't want to push it," he told TV Guide. "I want [a potential return] to be organic and I want it to feel right."
Braugher added of a possible regular role: "These three episodes are really my chance to see what it's like to be in the SVU world and [for] SVU to see what it's like to have me there.
"It's a necessary step for all of us to really find out where we stand, before making anything permanent."
True Blood's Carrie Preston, controversial comic Gilbert Gottfried, The West Wing's Timothy Busfield and The Cape's Izabella Miko have also landed roles in the show's 13th season.
