Amy Poehler is to direct an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation.

Poehler will make her directorial debut with an episode airing during May sweeps.

The May instalment, which Poehler has also written, will centre on Leslie Knope facing off in a debate against her city council opponent. Pawnee pundit Perd Hapley (Jay Jackson) will serve as debate moderator.

It has been reported that Paul Rudd will guest star on Parks and Recreation as one of Knope's political rivals, but it is not yet known whether he will appear in Poehler's directorial debut.

Parks and Recreation executive producer Mike Schur predicted that the city council debate will become a fan favourite moment.

"It's f**king great… It's an awesome, funny script," Schur told TV Line.

Parks and Recreation airs Thursdays at 8.30/7.30c on NBC.
