The creator of 2 Broke Girls has defended the comedy, calling it "ballsy" and "classy-dirty".

The sitcom has performed well for CBS so far in its first season, but has come under criticism for showing stereotypes.

Michael Patrick King said at a Television Critics Association panel: "If you talk about stereotypes, every character when it's born is a stereotype... This show started with two stereotypes - a blonde and a brunette - and that implies certain stigmas as well which we've tried to diffuse and grow [away from].

"The big story about race on our show is that so many are represented. The cast is not only incredibly multi-ethnic, it's also incredibly not ageist."

King also addressed the sitcom's humour, calling it "classy-dirty" and "high low-brow".

"The show is sophisticated and naughty and I think everyone likes a good naughty joke," he continued. "I feel no need to pull away from the brand of 2 Broke Girls, which is basically ballsy, in-your-face and hopefully funny.

"People pull away from something if it's not in good taste, and people lean into something if it's OK. And week after week, more and more people are leaning into 2 Broke Girls."

At the panel, King said that he has no intention of moving away from the diner where Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) work for the time being.

He said: "One of the important realities of 2 Broke Girls is the word 'broke'. And we try to deal [realistically] with how much money moves through their life.

"I don't foresee a way the girls could raise $350,000 in a season [and open a bakery]. I don't foresee them leaving the diner. I like them in the diner."

2 Broke Girls won a People's Choice Award last night for 'Favourite New TV Comedy'.
