Ratings for the cult show - the longest-running sci-fi series in US TV history - dropped off from 2.6 million to just 2 million viewers in recent months.
Mark Stern, the Sci-Fi Channel's evp of original programming, insisted that the decision was not based on ratings, however. "We're actually going out on a high note," he told Variety, adding that the early announcement would give producers sufficient time to wrap up any remaining loose ends.
Several cast members from SG-1 will transfer to spinoff series Stargate: Atlantis, which has been renewed for a fourth season in 2007.
Both series air on Sky One in the UK.
