The Fox detective drama took five titles, including best drama and best lead actor for Kiefer Sutherland, at its fifth outing to the awards. Sutherland, who plays Jack Bauer, commented: "Tonight has been an honour, but it's also an incredibly humbling experience."
Meanwhile The Office, a newcomer in its remade American form, was named best comedy at first try, though its star Steve Carell missed out on best comedy actor to Tony Shalhoub, a detective in the USA cable network's Monk.
Another newcomer to triumph was ex-Seinfeld actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who took best comedy actress for her part in new CBS sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine.
One definite upset at the awards was in the best reality show category, which saw CBS hit The Amazing Race triumph over popular favourite American Idol.
